Julien Chauvin, Conductor & violin

Very early on attracted by the Baroque revolution and the revival of performance on period instruments, Julien Chauvin went to train in the Netherlands, at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, with Vera Beths, founder of the Archibudelli alongside Anner Bylsma.

In 2003, he won the International Early Music Competition in Bruges and went on to perform as a soloist before forming Le Cercle de l'Harmonie in 2005, which he directed with Jérémie Rhorer for ten years.

Realising his wish to revive a famous 18th-century ensemble, Julien Chauvin founded a new orchestra in 2015: Le Concert de la Loge. The ambition of this re-creation is particularly evident in the exploration of forgotten pages of the French lyrical and instrumental repertoire, as well as concert formats that encourage spontaneity and imagination in the audience.

At the same time, he is continuing his collaboration with the Quatuor Cambini-Paris, founded in 2007, with whom he plays and records the quartets of Jadin, David, Gouvy, Mozart, Gounod and Haydn.

Julien Chauvin explores musical direction in the spirit of the late 18th century, when there was a great diversity of practices in the way music was ‘conducted’. He thus adapts his conducting according to the repertoires, the number of performers or the constraints of the score, conducting with the violin, the bow or the baton.

Julien Chauvin is the musical director of opera productions such as the show Era la notte directed by Juliette Deschamps with Anna Caterina Antonacci, Phèdre by Lemoyne and Cendrillon d'Isouard in Palazzetto Bru Zane productions directed by Marc Paquien, Haydn's Armida directed by Mariame Clément and Sacchini's Chimène ou le Cid directed by Sandrine Anglade, and Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio directed by Christophe Rulhes.

He is also a guest conductor with numerous ensembles: the Basel Chamber Orchestra, the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, the Orchestre national d'Avignon-Provence, the Orchestre national de Metz, the Orchestre national de Cannes, the Orchestre de l'opéra de Limoges, the Esterházy Hofkapelle, the Orkiestra Historyczna de Katowice, the Folger Consort in Washington, Les Violons du Roy in Montreal and the Arion Orchestre Baroque de Montréal.

Julien Chauvin's discography includes concertos by Haydn, Beethoven and Berlioz for the Eloquentia and Ambroisie-Naïve labels. With his ensemble Le Concert de la Loge, he has recorded the complete Paris Symphonies of Haydn, which he juxtaposes with other pieces premiered in Paris in the 1780s. Passionate about the rediscovery of forgotten French repertoire, he recorded the album ‘Si j'ai aimé’ with Sandrine Piau for the Alpha label. As a soloist, he recorded two albums of violin concertos for the Vivaldi Edition of the Naïve label.

He performs regularly with Alain Planès, Christophe Coin, Andreas Staier, Jean-François Heisser, Justin Taylor and Olivier Baumont, with whom he recorded the album ‘À Madame’ at the Palace of Versailles.

Alongside his concert activities, Julien Chauvin also devotes himself to teaching in the context of orchestra sessions or master classes at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris and the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Lyon, at the École normale de musique de Paris, at the Académie de l'Opéra de Paris and with the Orchestre Français des Jeunes.

Julien Chauvin is a knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.

Chauvin plays a Giuseppe Guadagnini violin from 1780 on loan as part of the ‘Adopt a Musician’ project.
