Johannes Gray, cello

After his debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the age of 14, the cellist Johannes Gray (27) has won numerous prizes, including the International JS Bach Competition in Leipzig, the International Pablo Casals Award, the gold medal at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, the APCAV Prize at the Verbier Festival, as well as the prestigious title of ‘Talent Adami Classique’.

His engagements as a soloist have taken him to four continents, with performances at the Berlin Philharmonie, the Ravinia and Verbier festivals, the Lincoln Center, the SuperCello festival (Beijing) and the Cello Biënnale Amsterdam. Last season, he made his concert debut in New York at the David Geffen Hall of the Lincoln Center.

Recently, he has performed with the Armenian State Orchestra, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and the Metamorphosen Berlin Chamber Orchestra, as well as at the Berlin Philharmonic, the Dubai Theatre for Digital Arts, the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, the Tajik State Opera Theatre and the Casals Forum in Kronberg.

Johannes has a long-standing musical relationship with pianist Anastasiya Magamedova (National YoungArts winner and Juilliard School graduate). Together, they are winners of the 2022 European Chamber Music Competition and have performed in Europe, America and the Middle East. As a duo, he has recorded an album with the Aparté label based on a ‘Fairytales’ project.

During his studies with Hans Jørgen Jensen in Chicago, Jérôme Pernoo in Paris, Frans Helmerson in Berlin and Ivan Monighetti in Madrid, he won numerous national and international prizes. In 2022, he won first prize at the World's Biggest Stage International Competition (dedicated to contemporary music), was a winner at the Classic Strings International Competition (Dubai), and received the special prize at the Emanuel Feuermann Grand Prix. In 2024, he won several prizes at the International JS Bach Competition in Leipzig, receiving second prize, the audience prize and the prize for a CD production with Genuin Classics.

Since 2020, he has been supported by the Scandinavian Cello School (SCS) in Denmark and has been promoted as a young SCS artist on numerous occasions, including an interview in the New York Times, an appearance on CNN, and a performance at the Musikverein on the occasion of the 100th Vienna Philharmonic Ball.

Johannes has been living in Paris since 2015.
