Since its foundation in 1984, the Basel Chamber Orchestra has been characterised by a love of playing and a spirit of musical discovery. With great energy and stylistic openness, the musicians dedicate themselves to a broad repertoire – from early music on historical
instruments to Viennese classical music and contemporary works. The result is a lively, distinctive sound, driven by an enthusiasm for making music together at the highest level. Established in Basel with subscription series in the Stadtcasino and its own rehearsal and performance venue, Don Bosco, the ensemble enjoys a high international reputation. Over 100 concerts per season regularly take the orchestra to major European stages and prestigious festivals.
Winner of the 2019 Swiss Music Prize, the Basel Chamber Orchestra inspires with artistic excellence and dedication. Projects such as Haydn2032, the recording and performance of all of Joseph Haydn's symphonies up to 2032, under the direction of Giovanni Antonini or the recording of the late Haydn masses with René Jacobs, demonstrate the deep desire for long-term, creative exploration.
Inspiring partnerships with artists such as Sol Gabetta, Christian Gerhaher, Alexandra Dovgan, Vilde Frang and the Collegium Vocale Gent are constantly emerging. The artistic direction is the responsibility of the concertmasters and conductors such as René Jacobs, Heinz Holliger, Delyana Lazarova and Pierre Bleuse.
An award-winning discography and diverse educational formats complete the lively work of the orchestra. The Clariant Foundation has been the presenting sponsor of the Basel Chamber Orchestra since 2019.
