Gauthier Capuçon cello
Born in 1981 in Chambéry, Gautier Capuçon began studying the cello at the age of four and followed the teaching of Henrich Schiff in Vienna. Winner of numerous international competitions, he was named ‘New Talent of the Year’ at the Victoires de la Musique awards in 2001.
He perfected his experience in the European Community Youth Orchestra with Bernard Haitink, then in the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester with Kent Nagano, Daniele Gatti, Pierre Boulez, Seiji Ozawa and Claudio Abbado.
He has performed with the world's leading orchestras (Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Dresden Staatskapelle, Vienna Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus, London Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre national de France, the orchestras of Boston, Chicago, and the New York Philharmonic) and regularly collaborates with leading conductors such as Semyon Bychkov, Myung-Whun Chung, Gustavo Dudamel, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Valery Gergiev, Bernard Haitink, Paavo Järvi, Andris Nelsons, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Leonard Slatkin and Tugan Sokhiev.
He also performs in recital and chamber music at major festivals in Europe, including the annual Verbier Festival and the Progetto Martha Argerich in Lugano. His partners include Nicholas Angelich, Martha Argerich, Daniel Barenboim, Lisa Batiashvili, Myung Whun Chung, Michel Dalberto, Hélène Grimaud, Katia and Marielle Labèque, Angelika Kirchschlager, Viktoria Mullova, Mikhail Pletnev, Stephen Kovacevitch, Menahem Pressler, Vadim Repin, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Maxim Vengerov, the Artemis and Ebène Quartets, and his brother Renaud.
His critically acclaimed discography is highly significant.
Since 2007 Gautier Capuçon has been the ambassador of the Zegna & Music Project, founded in 1997 as a philanthropic activity to promote music and its values. In October 2014 he created the ‘Cello Class of Excellence’ at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris.
He plays a 1701 Matteo Goffriler cello.
